| The boundary of the small town of BALATONSZÁRSZÓ is marked by a
cemetery containing the grave of Attila József , the tragic proletarian
poet. Dismissed by his literary peers and rejected by both his lover and
the Communist Party, he threw himself under a local freight train on
December 3, 1937. Attila spent his last days in a pension that's now a
memorial museum at József Attila utca 7 (Tues-Sun: April-Oct 10am-6pm;
Nov-March noon-4pm; 200Ft). The museum contains some of his manuscripts,
photographs and personal effects, as well as the crumpled, blood-stained
shirt he was wearing when struck by the train; unfortunately all
captions are in Hungarian only. If you're looking to stop here then the
Kék Tó Hotel , 50m across from the station at Ady Endre utca 3 (tel &
fax 84/362-935; 7000-10,000Ft; April to mid-Oct), is your best bet. The
clean and pleasant Tura Camping is 100m along the tracks from the
station in József Attila Park (tel 84/362-754; mid-June to Aug).
Alternatively, Siótour, 100m south of the train station at Fo utca 5 (mid-May
to Sept daily 8am-noon & 3-7pm; tel 84/362-956), can help with private
accommodation. The two pizzerias by the station might not occupy the
best location in the world but are agreeable all the same. |
